Latin names: Angelica sinensis, Angelica polymorpha and Angelica acutiloba.
The name Dong Quai covers several different strains of Angelica, including Angelica sinensis, Angelica polymorpha and Angelica acutiloba, amongst others. Dong Quai is also known as Tang Kuei, and is revered in China almost as highly as Panax ginseng. It is thought that Dong Quai has been used in China for at least 2,000 years, where it is said to have Yin qualities, whilst Panax ginseng has Yang qualities.
The Benefits of Dong Quai
Tonic – has been used as a tonic, cardiotonic, respiratory tonic and liver tonic.
Menstrual Cycle – has been used to help regulate the menstrual cycle and stop discomfort due to menstruation, as well as promoting menstruation when there is little or none.
Laxative – it has been used as a laxative.
Properties
Ligustilide and Ferulic Acid – Dong Quai contains two substances that have opposing effects on the uterus. The volatile oil substance, which includes ligustilide, inhibits contractions, whilst the non-volatile substance, which includes ferulic acid, stimulates contractions. Research has suggested that both these substances prevent spasms, relax vessels, and prevent blood clotting in peripheral vessels.
Coumarins – studies have shown that Dong Quai can reduce blood pressure by dilation of blood vessels, and this action has been attributed to the presence of coumarins. Coumarins also have antispasmodic and vasodilatory action.
Polysaccharides – these are said to have immune stimulating effects by stimulating the production of interferon and leukocytes (white blood cells).
Phytoestrogens – these may exert some regulating effect on oestrogen levels and biological mechanisms.
Contra-indications/Precautions
Should only be used with caution in conjunction with CNS depressants or stimulants. The oestrogen levels of Dong Quai may raise sugar levels enough to alter insulin requirement for diabetics. Coumarins can effect the action of almost any drug. Not recommended for use during pregnancy.
